Today's Assignment

*I'm writing based off of this post*

-The comparison between Jessica's Blog and the poem is that she interprets it as an actual story of Immigrants, but I interpret it as a Metaphor for new inmates in Jimmy Santiago Baca's prison.

-Nobody at my table has really read it, two were absent, one's lazy(Evelyn).

Jimmy Santiago Baca

Theme: Courage, it gives us hope that the Prison System isn't ruining anyone that enters it's foreboding arms

Tone: Mellow, it's not Violent, it's relaxed compared to other prison stories.

Mood: Non-cholent, he seems to be taking Prison well. I love the use of Metaphorical Immigrants an new Inmates.

My Mad dream of an Essay

Remember that time you ate that meal just before you went to bed on the night before the big Pre-Lim Swim-meet ?  Oh, that weird dream you had about the 2016 presidential election.  When you woke up you couldn't quite remember the shaky details, but after reading "On Self-Reliance" and "A Sound of Thunder" it's all coming back to you now.

The dream started badly.  You were in line with your family at a Polling Station waiting to be sent to America's Funeral.  Everywhere you looked there were posters of president-elect Tilda-Hair, looking like a crazy Cannibal who could eat a whole Nation in one single bite.

Suddenly, there was Ralph Waldo Emerson telling you, "Ne Te Quaseveris Extra."  You realized that you have something to contribute to the world so you decided to fight back.  But it wasn't easy.  First you had to put on a fancy shirt and tie and then you had make a trip to go back in time to the polling station so you could convince people to learn about the candidates and the "wall."

But right there in the Polling Station there was a giant Poster and it started yelling at everyone.  People started to gaze in wonder.  You grabbed a Hose from a nearby Fire Prevention location and yelled that we should make our own decisions in life.  Everyone stopped and listened, so you kept going.

Ralph Waldo-Emerson warned taught us not to look outside ourselves to solve life's problems. In A sound of Thunder, Ray Bradbury foreshadowed the outcome of our decisions through using a Butterfly as a Metaphor for the chaos theory, a chain reaction of events that would forever alter our future. If we take both warnings from those two extraordinary men, we won't let these events come true. If we think for ourselves and not others-become self-reliant-we can truly follow 'Ne te Quaseveris Extra.' If we follow the warning in 'A sound of thunder(the Butterfly Metaphor),' we won't have to have petty arguments about how you hate your nation becuase you disagree with another individual's decision.

Alternate Shortline Railway, South-East of Santa Maria

June 16, 1910:

It's the Opening Ceremony of the Figueroa Mountain Railway Company (FMRy Co.), Six New Geared Shay steam Locomotives, all Three-Foot Gauge, had just been delivered from Lima Locomotive Works in Illinois. The line had been constructed to serve the Surrounding Townships and a Logging Mill and a Mine at the Top of the Mountain, all Irish and Chinese Labor. Freight Cars, Passenger coaches, some purchased new, others purchased from the Pacific Coast Railway.

4:30 PST, Maiden Trip:

Engine Number 3 roars to life, followed by the sound of at least 300 cheers. As she groans up the incline with the first load, the Crowd watches in awe. Number 3 takes her time to climb slowly, if she goes too fast, the Gears would grind and She'd eventually slide back down the hill.

4:45 PST, The Poppy Mine is reached:

The Poppy mine had been constructed to extract Quartz for new Buildings being Erected in the surrounding Towns, and Number 3 was there to pick of the first load of Quartz. Equipped with a hopper car in her load, the Rocks would be transported down to base camp and loaded onto a Southern Pacific flatcar to be transported from there.

5:00 PST, Roaring Oak Logging Camp is Reached:

The Final stop on the Trip was the Logging camp atop the Mountain, used to gather Live Coastal oak wood for building around the country. A battered steam crane heaves the logs onto a flatcar, and Number 3 screeched her whistle, and Huffed back down the Mountain. Once Base camp is reached, the trip would be a success.

The Entire Lesson in 'A sound of Thunder'

Journal Topic: 11/14/16

1. Why is today's tune title appropriate for the story you just read?

2. What was the point of the story? Why do you think it ended the way it did?

1. Because the bullet, shot in a time millions of years before it's even thought of, would cause chaos throughout history, the Butterfly effect.

2. That man, if he ever travels to that past, would cause mass hysteria for the future. The hunter had damaged too much of the past, and shot himself.

An Earth Shattering Fart

The Short Story 'A sound of thunder' has an interesting theme, one of my Favorites is the quote "There is an opposite man for everything." This catches my interest because it's similar to Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

Weekend Essay

Prompt: Our thoughts on How Emerson would View the 2016 Election

I feel like Emerson would be disappointed in us. We have a leader who wants us all to conform into society and Blame the minorities, who he feels aren't intelligent. Emerson quotes that even babies and Brutes can be geniuses, and Trump views the Minorities of America as Idiotic Brutes who are determined to ruin the country.

Trump also plans on finding a single scapegoat to blame for the United Sate's Hardships, China, Mexico, the Islamic individuals, etc. Emerson also quotes that we should not look outside ourselves to solve life's problems, Ne te quaseveris extra, but Our commander in Chief seems to throw that notion out.

Society is a wave, but the water does not move with it. Our Society has been 'a wave' following and believing whatever the Media says. Emerson wants us to break away from society and believe what we want to, not what we're told to believe.

The soul is no traveler; a wise man stays at home. Emerson points out that a smart individual stays at home, yet if we are wise for staying at home, how could such a terrifying individual become president if the wise man won't vote?

What I must do is all that concerns me, not what others think of me. If we believe that Trump is a dictator, then we must impeach him. What his supporters think of us shouldn't even cross our minds.

Emerson Notes: Final Countdown

Giovanni:
-The soul is no traveler, the soul is always at home

Isaias:
-These are the voices when we hear in solitude, but they grow faint and inaudible as we enter into the world

Journal Topic: 11/10/16

Describe something you count on in your life. This can be a person (a parent will not move your entire household out of state today while you are at school), an assumption about the physical world (the ground beneath you will not give way so that your next step will land you in free fall for eternity), or a social contract (if you attend and stay out of trouble, you will graduate high school and live a life better than your parents').

I depend on society, a group of people, not to fall apart and become a violent mob at the slightest aggravation. Why this? I need to get to school relatively unharmed.

Journal Topic- End of the World- 11/8/16

Topic: Election Day. I know. Enough Already. But, this is the job of the citizen in the Democracy. We must choose. And, in a way, choice is the fabric of our life. The choices we make define who we become. What we don't/say and what we don't/do eventually define who we become. What we don't/say and what we don't/do eventually become the patterns and the stories that we identify as our characters and our personalities. This is why Hamlet's "To be or not to be" moment is so important. So: describe an important choice you made in your life. Why did it matter? Did it change things for you? How? Did it give you a sense of who you are? Do you think today's choice matters? Spend time on this one. Choose.

Well, a couple years ago a friend of ours was considering suicide. Nobody could get a hold of her, the suicide hotline wasn't helping, so my Mother and I called her, and I talked to her, telling her not to do it. If we hadn't called her, maybe she wouldn't be alive today. Today's choice really does matter: Do we elect Hitler, or do we take another chance like we did electing President Obama and elect the first Female President?

Topic: Emerson's transcendentalist contemporary (there's a mouthful!) Henry David Thoreau wrote, "Men have become the tools of their tools." What do you think he Meant? Do you agree? Why/why not?

Response: 'Men have become the tools of their tools.' We are being used by the things we once took for granted. Yes. We are so reliant on our tools, Smartphones, Computers etc. that we are the tools, not the inanimate objects.

MY EMERSON

"Ne Te Quaesiveris Extra"

Why do I agree with this quote? It's because it's the entire root meaning of Self-Reliance. It roughly translates to "Do not look outside yourself," to which I assume Ralph-Waldo Emerson means it in a way as to not look outside ourselves to solve life's problems. Your Girlfriend/Boyfriend broke up with you? Don't cry about it and seek revenge and pop a cap in their ass, suck it up and get on with your life.

Journal Topic: 11/4/16

Topic:

Put two hands over your heart. Think about a moment that made you grateful. Click "pause" on everything else. Wait a coupe of moments after you think you're done. Then write. (Did you notice any change in yourself? Does this Exercise feel the same as the first time you did it, or do you notice change over time? What is on your mind now?)

It feels slightly different then the first time I did it, but I feel more relaxed than earlier. I'm just looking forward to Thanksgiving break, I'm ready for some time off.

Proposal

I strongly feel that we, as a class, should memorize a specific quote we agree/disagree with to discuss and explain in class to give you, Dr. Preston, an understanding of what we learned from the topic of Self-Reliance Because:

-It forces Dialogue in the class

-It gives us an opportunity to practice our Public Speaking skills

-Through explanation of why we selected a specific quote from the text, an event is created where we, the students, are able to learn from each other due to the quotes chosen. For example: I choose the Latin quote and explain why I agree/believe in it. This gives other people the chance to use the meaning of said quote to expand their opinions on a subject, especially themselves and vise-versa.

Journal Topic: 11/3/16

Topic: How should we wrap up our study of Emerson? I'm thinking essay but I'm open. Include what's most Important to you in terms of his ideas and your learning.

I think we should memorize a quote that we personally agree or disagree with, and define it with an explanation as to why we agree or Disagree with the quote with intricate details. I personally favor the Beginning quote in Latin, 'Ne te quaesiveris extra,' as it's the complete meaning of his essay and our Education.

Wednesday, November 2, 2016

Emerson Said it

Ne te quaesiveris extra- Latin for Do not look outside yourself(Not a literal translation).

His hidden meaning lies in our endeavors; Our valors are our best gods- one of four aspects of life derived from the concept of self-reliance

Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string- Self motivation telling an individual to follow their instincts, heart and mind.

Be Yourself- to believe in yourself

The world has been instructed by its kings, who have so magnetized the eyes of nations- the world has taken its orders by so few people who have gotten our attention-to which we shouldn't pay attention to.

Journal Topic: 11/2/16

When is it best to speak up and be honest even though you know it's going to piss someone off? When is it best to "go along get along"? Do you think Emerson would ever recommend following the herd to fit in, even if it goes against your best self or trust your true instincts? Why/why not? Explain your answer.

When that individual isn't making a positive contribution to society. Never. He'd want us to trust our true instincts, because we wouldn't be our unique selves if we blended in with everyone else.

Tuesday, November 1, 2016

Journal Entry- 11/1/16

How much is Emerson's message sinking in? From a scale of 1-10, 1 being 'Emerson's full of crap' and 10 being 'Emerson's exactly right,' please provide, with at least two quotes, a rating on how accurate you feel his message is compared to today.

I believe 10 sums it up, 'Ne te quaesiveris extra,' Do not look outside yourself(to solve life's problems), and 'Trust thyself: every heart beats to that iron string,' as we should believe in ourselves as all our hearts beat for one thing, life, and how can we 'live' if we the youth are not trusted?

175 years later, would Emerson Puke or Celebrate?

Emerson would Puke. Nobody is Self-Reliant, it's all about getting rich off of others in this Day and age. People disrespect each other, and Elders aren't giving the youth a chance. Violent Groups are recruiting us so the 'Valuable' Older people can survive, while the youth a forced to kill each other, and aren't expected to die. Examples: Street Gangs, Armies, and ideas that seem fun but end up in disaster.

Journal topic- 10/31/16

Scary Story:

It was a dark and foreboding All Hollow’s Eve; I was reclining in my battered bungalow, awaiting the youth to come a rapping upon my threshold door, and resting in my lap was my Midnight colored feline, Jiji. I was spread out upon the couch, browsing the depths of the web on my device.

Around roughly 7:30 PM, the first Trick-or-treaters marched up, and called out their hymn, "Trick or Treat!" I snuck silently over to the door, bowl of candy in hand, threw open the door, and shouted "TRICK!" The little children screamed, and I passed out their treats. Chuckling, I said "Happy Halloween..." and shrank back into the house.

After two or more hours of scaring children, I began to turn out the lights and lock the house up. Once 10 PM rolled around, and everyone was in bed, I was preparing for bed when I heard a knocking on the front door. Bewildered, I opened the front door. Standing there was a man in hist later 60s, in a hospital gown, a look of fear wild in his tired eyes.

"May I help you?" I inquired. He stood still, staring at me. He began to reach towards the door, attempting to let himself in. Panicked, I slammed the door, ran to My Parent's room, and Grabbed the Airsoft gun in my Father's closet. I sprinted out to the Tool Shed, Found the BBs, loaded the Gun, and waited in the Dining room to see what would happen next.

Ten minutes went by, nothing. Just as I was starting to calm down, one of the Windows shattered, and a bloody hand reached through. I cocked the weapon, and aimed. Just when the man's face came into view, I fired at his right eye. A blood curdling shriek rattled the house's frame, and I blacked out. When I woke up, The window was fine, the man was gone, and I was on the couch. Was it a dream? Maybe.

Author in Progress

On the subject of the Emerson writing yesterday, I feel like I got my points across fairly well, but my sentence and paragraph structure could use some improvements, along with some more flavorful punctuation in there as well.

Well, I just saw Dr. Preston throw Isaias's Phone across the room, Destroying it. If that isn't an excuse to get an iPhone 7, I don't know what is.

Something Interesting about my Lit. Analysis book

I'm still reading 'The Martian Chronicles' by Ray Bradbury, and something interesting about it is one of the Characters, Thomas(Toe-Mahs), meets a martian in present tie, but the martian is experiencing time as it was 14000 years ago, yet he's able to interact with Thomas. This is a concept that fascinates me, and IO'd like to know more about.

MY AMERICAN VOICE

What do I speak up about? How do I do it? I speak up on topics I feel strongly effect our lives. I went on a rant a few weeks ago during the hot weather about how our 'School District' is actually a 'School Dictatorship' because I feel like Santa Maria High School is treated like a minor priority, even though the campus is in shambles, only a few of the buildings have circulation, two of the Portables are unfit to be used(One, 628, is not up to California Earthquake Regulations, but they use it anyways instead of fixing the fucking thing, and one Portable in the 400 block has Cockroaches, that my Spanish Teacher dealt with all last year no matter how much she complained), Our Furniture is drastically outdated--and two of the desks collapsed in on themselves my Freshman year, with people in them--The rooms are too cramped, as my history teacher had more students than what the Room was approved for and at least 18 students had to sit on the floor because of a lack of desks, The District Just gave us these tablets because they wouldn't update the Textbooks every few years(Some of the Atlases have East and West Germany, USSR for Russia, And a little old country called Yugoslavia), our famous Ethel Pope Auditorium is overdue for a renovation, but nothing is done for the wonderful building, Again with the portables: When the original buildings were demolished in the 70s, the portables were supposed to last Five years; Forty-Five years have passed and jack shit has happened with these no matter how many problems there are. What solution do I feel is necessary? Become a Union High School again, or Take over One room on the Admin building and refuse to leave until something is done, no matter how long it takes. Just because our school is roughly 89 to 90 percent Hispanic, that doesn't fucking mean the district can treat us like the Black Sheep of the District.

DOWN WITH THE DISTRICT .

Our election this year has been transformed into a venomous joke. Trump is Aggravating the country. I think trump has anticipated Hillary's loss with his evil words. I believe both have lies dripping from the Republican's Capillary Proboscis, and we the people have been watching and listening to the debate in a Melancholy state of mind. This is one election we worry about with both accusing the other with crap nobody cares about. Our country will dissolve under either leadership, and we've been hypnotized to believe if Hillary dies the election will become suspended.

Letter to a Mentor

Please note: The Mentor I need has been dead for 216 years.

  Dear Mr. Washington,

I have a question--a BIG question--Do we actually need a national government? Couldn't each state/Territory Gov't keep each other equal through checks and balances? With multiple Governments controlling the country, there's a smaller chance of one Corrupt leader screwing the country over, right? I know that you worked hard to set up our National government the way it is, but it's so screwed up now the country's falling apart. If you could read this 240 years ago, would you please change it?

    Regards,

      SJH.

The Pedestrian: Respecting Authority-- Then versus Now

How does Leonard Mead respect authority in 'The Pedestrian' versus today? Well, Leonard mead is respectful and polite when he's stopped by the Police Car, answers when asked, and was inquisitive when told to get in, then willingly got into the back of the car. Today, if somebody's stopped, with the Police Shootings and similar events in this day and age, People rebel, run, and are impolite toward police(Lots of people yell things like 'Fuck the Police' and other stupid shit), because they feel as if Police are abusing their Authority. It really does upset me, whenever I see a Police Officer, I usually either nod as a greeting, or Say 'Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening' to the officer just to show that there's still people who respect their Authority. In fact, I had been at one of the Downtown Fridays/Farmer's Market here in Santa Maria, and there was a CHP Booth giving out information about what they do. I politely Said "Hello" to the officer, who replied with "Hi, How are you?" I reply with "Good, and you?" We had a very nice conversation about the cruiser and about how they have Jurisdiction on Broadway and Main, because they're Highway 135 and 166. When I was about to leave, I looked into the back, and Said "This is a place I hope never to end up. I'll try my hardest to keep my nose clean. Thank you for your service." People who respect authority with police and are polite usually aren't targeted for crazy crap, I'm not saying those men who were shot were being impolite, there are of course many Corrupted officials and ones who don't care what race you are, they want to help you no matter what, and I try to remember that.

"The Pedestrian" Inciting incident.

The inciting incident from Ray Bradbury's "The Pedestrian" is when he's falsely arrested by the police car, for walking. Sure it's 2059 and nobody walks anymore, but who wants to conform? He's taken to a mental institute because he was W.A.L.K.I.N.G. and seemed insane. Ray Bradbury truly was predicting our future: Nobody walking, self-aware automobiles, people being arrested for no logical reason etc. How sad we must be.

Respect My Authority

How Authority Figures respect my Authority is basically I have my own rights, I was given the option to choose what I wanted to believe in(Atheism), I make my own decisions, hell, I've never even had a curfew. My Authority is respected when I do the same to others. I've never challenged them on this that or the other, They're their own human with their own rights.

Mistakes for President

Both Secretary Clinton and Mr. Trump have a solid game-plan for their time in office, but Trump continues to interrupt Secretary Clinton and be a distraction. Basically one's a millionaire that acts like a Baby, the other has experience in the residential office, yet Trump continues to attack her.

Pedestrian-First Impression

It's interesting, at the beginning it sounds like he's the only living thing on earth, but as the story progresses it's shown that he's the only life form that still walks.

I spent a good portion of my afternoon yesterday Googling "DIY Particle Accelerator" and "DIY Fusion Reactor," observed some Interesting E-bay listings for 'Used' particle accelerator parts and even watched a video about a 15 year old boy who built a functional nuclear reactor in his shed, which also gave me lots the info I need to build my own DIY Reactor, and Homeland Security hasn't come knocking on my door yet. I'm starting to feel as if the "Government tracking your search history" thing is just propaganda. Well, we'll find out soon enough...

MY AERIES

Friday's Essay: B-

I understand why I got this grade. I hadn't read either the night prior and was just using what I remember from skimming the stories.

I don't know what other grades I've gotten in class, but I suppose I've earned at least a C or C+ at most.

Vocab attempt.

As the newly wed couple crossed the threshold, they had faith in each other that they were going to be together for many years to come. Little did the wife know that her husband was a pious martyr in the Penitentes, a group of devoted Catechism. After several years, the couple had a baby. The Baby, upon meeting his Father for the first time, let out a joyful mirth. After another handful of years, the Husband was almost Tarried by the townspeople after a religious quarrel caused mass frenzy. The wife and young son discerned the importance of this ceremony and attempted to resolve the conflict.

Journal Topic-9/1/16

(I'm doing this on the blog because I can't find any pencils)

Topic: Adults say to toddlers all the time: "Use your Words." What do they mean, my words? We know that fiction authors use dialogue for the purpose of indirect characterization-- as you write the story of your life each day, how do the words you choose create an impression of who you are?

Response: Well, my words can be viewed in two different ways: One way: The things you're force fed every single day of your life. The second way: "Made Up" words. You can choose to create something of your own even if society chooses to label it "Gibberish." I try to use words that have a high level of vocabulary yet are easy to understand for those who don't understand every nine-lettered word out there, making me seem intelligent yet easy to understand(I may seem smart to other Americans but I'm quite convinced I'm considered 'Average' in places like Europe or India).

Am I succeeding in this work environment?

I had to respond to a journal topic with the question "Is this work environment helping you achieve? What's holding you back?"

Literary Analysis Questions #1

(1) The Plot of "The Martian Chronicles"  is a human astronaut lands on Mars, unaware that it's inhabited. One of the Citizens of the small village he lands near, Mrs. Yll(I have no clue how to pronounce that) has recurring dreams of him Landing in the Green valley down the hill from their home. Her Husband dismisses her dreams as just nonsense, but keeps a close eye on her anyways.

(2) The theme of the novel is a Sci-Fi style story of discovery, danger, and most likely love.

(3) The Author is an early riser, and probably spends most of his time on the novel. He drinks coffee to stay awake long enough to get a thought down. A healthy breakfast with Eggs, Bacon, and some OJ.
1- The green Valley down the hill from their home.
2- The angry buzz of the evil weapon, and her husband's silver mask to protect him from the Bees.
3- Her husband walked over to a column. A stream of hot, steamy water gurgled out.

Excerpts like these can't come off the top of your head, you need time to add minute detail to the text.

      2-Foreshadowing
-The man came to me in my dream every night.

GOODMAN BROWN/CONSCIENCE OF A HACKER

Response to COAH: I think that the hacker could just be a misunderstood rebel who only wants to explore the online surroundings, but uses his skills for mischief.

Response to GB: The Salem witch Trials were a sad period of history. People were burned alive for being different. What happened to Faith was just sad; she shouldn't have had to 'embrace the dark one' for the worshipers. How horrific would it have been to come home and find the person you loved oh so dearly GONE? And even when he found her, he never knew what happened to her after the encounter, whether she escaped or was burned.

The books I'm considering reading:

A: "Alice in Wonderland"

B: "The Martian Chronicles"

C: "*A Clockwork Orange"

*Many books sent to the US were Censored, so I may not be able to find an ORIGINAL version.

As always, another journal entry.

TOPIC: Since the words of these songs(Wankatakiya and It is a good day by Spirit Nation) are unfamiliar(as they are not in English), just listen to them as part of the music for now. It's a good time to think about tone  and mood. Tone is the author's attitude toward the characters, the subject, and/ or the audience. Mood is the emotional state of the reader. How would you describe the tone and mood of these songs? How would you describe the tone and mood of White Buffalo Calf Women?

RESPONSE: I would describe the tone and mood of these songs as slow beat and relaxed, not a type of song that is supposed to fill you with energy(Green Day Much?). I think the way the lyrics are presented the singer(s) is/ are trying to make you think about something,--that of which I don't know as my fluency in foreign languages just barely applies to Español--perhaps a political issue in the Country of origin? I'd describe the Sioux legend(well, the version I listened to on YouTube.com) as a calming, native flute while the story comes on lyric form on screen, but once you're in quite away, the music changes to a more fast beat music, catching you off guard and completely shattering your expectation of what the music would be like, because it's a Native American legend(notice how I didn't say 'Indian?').

My BIG question.

Could Socialism benefit the United States?

Is Capitalism really that great?

Do we need a Government? Couldn't the states regulate each other instead of one big Group of people running the show?

|-{SOCRATIC SEMINAR #1/EARTH ON TURTLE'S BACK}-|

Earth On Turtle's Back and Socratic Seminar Notes:

-Nothing is original because of the way things are presented from one generation to another.

-When first translated, some words might've been changed throughout time.

-The original language EOTB was written in could be a 'Dead Language' today.

-All stories are just mutants of others.

Surprise Surprise, another journal entry!

Surprise Surprise, another journal entry!

TOPIC: So many phrases say the same thing: Talk is cheap. A picture's worth a thousand words. It's not what you said, it's how you said it. Since words are so easy to create we tend to mistrust them. We use our intuition to "read between the lines" and determine what someone really means. Describe how we listen, read and learn without depending on words.

RESPONSE: How do we learn without words? Ever heard 'Actions speak louder than words?' We can easily do all these things using sound, touch, taste etc. You can learn a story through acting with just sound, like a ballet, you can listen to the sounds of the world around us, or you can learn and read expressions on a person's face.

ANCIENT STORIES

How is this Language in this text similar to and / or different from the Language in everyday conversation?

Because it's an oral story, "Earth on Turtle's Back" can be found in multiple text versions. How important is it for a story to be repeated word for word? Is meaning embellished, distorted, lost, or enhanced in the retelling?

[BONUS] Find your own early (pre-writing/1492) American myth and compare it to "Earth on Turtle's Back" --come to class Thursday prepared to share.

The Language in "Earth on Turtle's Back" is similar to language today by the use of short sentences and words that aren't hard to follow upon. The way it's different is how it's using a combination of words that most people don't use, for example the are no contractions nor slang in said story.

If I'm quite keen on learning the entire story, I'd prefer it to be translated word for word, but in a manner I can easily understand. The meaning is usually distorted because it's being transferred from one individual to another, and each individual has his or her own way of telling it.

Because of our location, it might be challenging to find a common native american folktale without either asking someone of native descent or visiting a site with native folk-legends available to witness. Maybe more people in Santa Maria have legends passed down from their ancestors, the Mayans, the Africans, etc. As for I, I'm mixed European, and no relatives remain that could have legends from Ireland or Germany that are accessible. Maybe my relatives in Austria have stories, but there's no way to tell. Stories are never told the same way they are written, and they never stay with one specific Group of people, so all legends are just Quilts of other words and stories other people added when they learned it, and those before them and so forth.

Yet another Journal Response.

Journal Response-August 17, 2016

TOPIC: Why do people argue? What factors should determine who wins an Argument? Describe a time you won or lost an Argument. Did the experience change your mind? If it didn't, what would have?

RESPONSE: To me, 'Argument' is just a petty way of saying 'Debate,' and there are two main types of Arguing: The main version is trying to show who's right on a topic, such as when someone abuses a spouse because they claim that the spouse was 'Ungrateful' or 'Undeserving' which usually ends up in violent physical contact. The second is more of a 'Debate' to collaborate on a common problem, like in the United Nations. Usually the winner of an Argument or Debate is the person who's idea is used or the opposing party backs down to said person. The times I've been in an Argument, I sometimes win, but usually lose. I'm usually trying to Debate a problem and end up losing, and it changes my mind even if I do win, such as when one of our pets that was still quite small and young escaped to the backyard when there was a Opossum out and about. As said pet was black in color, I was worried that he might get attacked and we wouldn't be able to find him. My idea was to run out with a flashlight and try to catch him, while my Mother's idea was to let him come in on his own terms. We tried both ideas and mine didn't work, so I changed my mind and let him come back inside when he was ready; he did come back in eventually, but I couldn't help but worry.

"Silence is Argument carried out by other means."

Response to 'The Earth on thee Turtle's Back'

You have to appreciate Native American Story Telling. That creativity can be passed down from one Generation to another, or another ethnicity. These stories or ideas often are reworked into Novels, such as Daniel Pinkwater's 'The Neddiad.'

Journal Entry-8/16/16

TOPIC: We use phrases like "pay attention" and "make a decision" all the time-- what do they mean to you? How would you teach a child to do either? How might you improve your own abilities in these areas?

RESPONSE: What do these mean to me? They mean people don't believe I can consciously decide to do these things on my own; I'm more than capable of paying attention or making a decision on my terms. Teaching a child to do these things is interesting, because you need to decide if the child is capable of understanding the meanings of these words, 'decision' and 'attention,' if the are, great, give them time to choose whether or not too choose to do these things. If not, let them figure it out. I might improve in these areas by choosing whether or not that decision or attention paying is in my best interest or the interest of others.

"Good decisions come from experience. Experience comes from making bad decisions."

Journal Entry-August 15, 2016

Journal Topic: What did you learn in Class last week?

Response: What I learned in class last week was how to use technology to your advantage in modern Education. My opinion of it is that we can become more productive through sharing our work online and learn more through updated information instead of our tattered, outdated books(Some Atlases here still have either Russia as the USSR, Yugoslavia, or East and West Germany). Although our technological journey is still in the early stages, I believe it will benefit us more than an obsolete textbook.
